The Good Life

What if the good life demands difficult moments?

Don’t Waste Your Suffering

Looking for Wisdom

Job 28:9–12 “Man puts his hand to the flinty rock and overturns mountains by the roots. 10 He cuts out channels in the rocks, and his eye sees every precious thing. 11 He dams up the streams so that they do not trickle, and the thing that is hidden he brings out to light. 12 “But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?

Job 28:23–24, 28 “God understands the way to it, and he knows its place. 24 For he looks to the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens… 28 And he said to man, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.’”

Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Living with Conviction

Job 32:1–5 So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. 2 Then Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram, burned with anger. He burned with anger at Job because he justified himself rather than God. 3 He burned with anger also at Job’s three friends because they had found no answer, although they had declared Job to be in the wrong. 4 Now Elihu had waited to speak to Job because they were older than he. 5 And when Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, he burned with anger.

Learning about God

God is a Teacher

Job 33:19-26 A person may be disciplined on his bed with pain and constant distress in his bones, 20 so that he detests bread, and his soul despises his favorite food. 21 His flesh wastes away to nothing, and his unseen bones stick out. 22 He draws near to the Pit, and his life to the executioners. 23 If there is an angel on his side, one mediator out of a thousand, to tell a person what is right for him 24 and to be gracious to him and say, “Spare him from going down to the Pit; I have found a ransom,” 25 then his flesh will be healthier than in his youth, and he will return to the days of his youthful vigor. 26 He will pray to God, and God will delight in him. That person will see his face with a shout of joy, and God will restore his righteousness to him.

God is Just

Job 34:10-12 Therefore listen to me, you men of understanding. It is impossible for God to do wrong, and for the Almighty to act unjustly. 11 For he repays a person according to his deeds, and he gives him what his conduct deserves. 12 Indeed, it is true that God does not act wickedly and the Almighty does not pervert justice.

God is Omnipotent

Job 37:23–24 The Almighty—we cannot find him; he is great in power; justice and abundant righteousness he will not violate. 24 Therefore men fear him; he does not regard any who are wise in their own conceit.”
