Waiting Well Requires Trusting God and His Sovereignty

“1 There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil."

Job 1:1

5 And when the days of the feast had run their course, Job would send and consecrate them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts.” Thus Job did continually. "Job 1:5"

6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them.

Job 1:6

7 The Lord said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the Lord and said, "From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it."

Job 1:7

God is Sovereign, God has Supreme Power and Authority

8 And the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?”

9 Then Satan answered the Lord and said, "Does Job fear God for no reason?

10 Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.

11 But stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face."

12 The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

Job 1:6-12

28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:28

13 Now there was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house,14 and there came a messenger to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them, 15 and the Sabeans fell upon them and took them and struck down the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 16 While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, "The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”17 While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, "The Chaldeans formed three groups and made a raid on the camels and took them and struck down the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you."18 While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house, 19 and behold, a great wind came across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young people, and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”

Job 1:13-19

20 Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped. 21 And he said, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord."22 In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong.

Job 1:20-22

"1Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: 2"Who is this who obscures My counsel by words without knowledge? 3 Now brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall inform Me.4 Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. 5 Who fixed its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched a measuring line across it? 6 On what were its foundations set, or who laid its cornerstoned 7 while the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Job 38:1-7

“3 Then Job answered the LORD: 4” Behold, I am insignificant. How can I reply to You? I place my hand over my mouth. 5 I have spoken once, but I have no answer- twice, but I have nothing to add."

Job 40:3-5

10 After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD restored his prosperity and doubled his former possessions. 11 All his brothers and sisters and prior acquaintances came and dined with him in his house. They consoled him and comforted him over all the adversity that the LORD had brought upon him. And each one gave him a piece of silverc and a gold ring. 12 So the LORD blessed Job's latter days more than his first. He owned 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys.13 And he also had seven sons and three daughters. 14 He named his first daughter Jemimah, his second Keziah, and his third Keren-happuch.15 No women as beautiful as Job's daughters could be found in all the land, and their father granted them an inheritance among their brothers. 16 After this, Job lived 140 years and saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. 17And so Job died, old and full of years.

Job 42:10-17

In the Waiting, and In the Heartache...it's ok to Mourn.

Our Mourning must be Mingled with Worship

And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life.

Matthew 19:29
