Difficulty & Dependence

Under the Sun

By Paul Priddy, July 02, 2023

God offers us a full life in an empty world.

“12 For who knows what is good for man while he lives the few days of his vain life, which he passes like a shadow? For who can tell man what will be after him under the sun?” - Ecclesiastes 6:12

A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of birth. 2 It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting, for this is the end of all mankind, and the living will lay it to heart. 3 Sorrow is better than laughter, for by sadness of face the heart is made glad. 4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth. 5 It is better for a man to hear the rebuke of the wise than to hear the song of fools.

The Preacher says…this is good to pursue and experience in our limited time we’re given to live…

Is He Right?

“16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God[b] may be complete, equipped for every good work. - 2 Timothy 3:16-17

The Bible Interprets the Bible

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

  • Matthew 5:3-5

“8 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. 11 For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12 So death is at work in us, but life in you.” - 2 Cor. 4:8-12

2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. 3 And I know that this man was caught up into paradise—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows— 4 and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter.

5 On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses— 6 though if I should wish to boast, I would not be a fool, for I would be speaking the truth; but I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me.

“7 So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited.”

“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” - 2 Cor. 12:2-4; 5-6; 7; 9-10

Difficulty Develops Dependence.

5 It is better for a man to hear the rebuke of the wise than to hear the song of fools

Ecclesiastes 7:1-5 is Wise Counsel ONLY If Jesus Is Central

The Death of Others Forces Us to Consider the Future Death of Ourselves

When We Consider Death to Be Imminent, The Advance of the Gospel Becomes Urgent.

If Difficulty Develops Dependence, and your life is DIFFICULT, upon whom or what do you depend?

How do I depend on Jesus?

  • Repent
  • Believe
  • Pray
  • Belong

If Difficulty Develops Dependence, and your life is ‘EASY,’ How Can You Pursue ‘Biblical Difficulty’?

34A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” - John 13:34-35

28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” - Matthew 20:28
