Kingdom Values

By Cory DiCarro, October 30, 2022

Big Idea: Living in God’s Kingdom means giving towards things that matter.

Matthew 6:19–24 19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! 24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

  • Each one of us sets our heart, mind, and will on something. Each one of us sets our future on something.

Matthew 6:21 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

  • Our heart always follows the treasure. Treasure does not follow our heart.

Matthew 6:24 24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

  • We can only have our treasure and our heart in one place; we cannot store up treasure on earth and in heaven at the same time.

1 Timothy 6:17–19 17 As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 18 They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19 thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.

  • It is not wrong to possess things, but it is wrong for things to possess us.

  1. Have you ever bought something you really wanted and it wasn’t worth it or didn’t last as long as you expected? What are things we can put money towards or invest in that will last?
  2. Do you think God needs our money? If God doesn’t need our money, why does God call us to be generous givers?
