The Importance of Faith

Not Without Hope

Our faith needs a foundation

1 Thessalonians 3:1-4 – Therefore when we could bear it no longer, we were willing to be left behind at Athens alone,  2  and we sent Timothy, our brother and God's coworker [a]  in the gospel of Christ, to establish and exhort you in your faith,  3  that no one be moved by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that we are destined for this.  4  For when we were with you, we kept telling you beforehand that we were to suffer affliction, just as it has come to pass, and just as you know.

We need to recognize the to our faith

1 Thessalonians 3:5 – For this reason, when I could bear it no longer, I sent to learn about your faith, for fear that somehow the tempter had tempted you and our labor would be in vain.

Matthew 3:3-8 – And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow.  4  And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them.  5  Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil,  6  but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away.  7  Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them.  8  Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

Matthew 3:18-23 – “Hear then the parable of the sower:  19  When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path.  20  As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy,  21  yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. [a]   22  As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.  23  As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”

God uses faith to encourage others

1 Thessalonians 3:6-8 – But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and has brought us the good news of your faith and love and reported that you always remember us kindly and long to see us, as we long to see you—  7  for this reason, brothers, [a]  in all our distress and affliction we have been comforted about you through your faith.  8  For now we live, if you are standing fast in the Lord.
