Genesis 3:16-19

Why does God impose consequences?

  • So that we might understand that there’s a to sin
  • So that we might understand that is not the way it’s supposed to be
  • So that we might understand that we do this again
  • So that we might understand that we don’t live unto
  • So that we might understand that there’s for this

“The LORD God said…”

TO the woman—God’s consequences in relation to the woman (Gen. 3:16)

Who is the woman?

Why does God address the woman?

1 Timothy 2:14

What are God's consequences in relation to the woman?

  • Your relationship with children will be difficult (Gen. 3:16)
  • Your relationship with men will be difficult (Gen. 3:16)

desire = Genesis 3:16; Gen. 4:7; Song of Solomon 7:11

(Gen. 3:16) Your desire shall be for your husband, but he shall rule over you.

(Gen. 4:7) Its desire is for you,but you must rule over it.

“In Genesis 4:7 it is plain that ‘desire for’ someone is ‘desire to master’ that person, while the ‘ruling’ is not a punishment but the necessary remedy. If we apply this to 3:16, we conclude that God describes a condition of human marriages that is all too familiar; namely, competition for control. The proper remedy is a return to the creational pattern of the man’s leadership—loving, not dominating.” (C. John Collins, p. 160)

Why does God impose these consequences on the woman?

TO the man—God’s consequences in relation to the man (Gen. 3:17-19)

Why does God address the man?

listen (shema, obey) eat (5x in vv. 17-19)

What are God's consequences in relation to the man?

  • Your work will be difficult (Gen. 3:17-19)
  • Your life will be difficult (Gen. 3:17-19)

Why does God impose these consequences on the man?

How should we understand these consequences for us, today?

Observations Regarding Consequences in Romans 5:12-21

“sin came into the world through one man” (Rom. 5:12)

“death (came into the world) through (that one man’s) sin” (Rom. 5:12)

“death spread to all mean because all sinned” (Rom. 5:12)

“many died through one man’s trespass” (Rom. 5:15)

“by one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners” (Rom. 5:19)

When it comes to consequences:

We can tend to…

We should instead let…
