A [very brief] Theology of Pastoral Ministry

No. 3 | How should pastoral ministry be implemented?

By Danny Capon, January 26, 2025

Pastoral ministry is the leadership within a local church, caring for it according to God’s plan and purpose, and doing so predominantly by providing faithful instruction from his word and modeling faithful Christian living.

How should pastoral ministry be implemented?

  1. By following the Bible… Acts 20:28; Ephesians 4:11-12; 1 Tim. 3:1; Titus 1:5
  • A church should normally have at least a pastor, but pastors plural is a clear and wise pattern:

1 Tim. 3:1; Acts 11:30; Acts 14:23; Acts 15:4; Acts 20:17; Acts 21:18; Tim. 5:17; Titus 1:5, James 5:14; 1 Peter 5:1

  • Pastors should normally be known men who can be affirmed with a measure of confidence, and even typically developed and recognized from within a church:

1 Timothy 3:2-7

  • Pastoral ministry should normally be considered for compensation by the church and every pastor is truly a pastor, but some degree of differentiation may practically exist:

1 Timothy 5:17-19

  • Pastors should normally lead in implementing pastoral ministry in the church, but the congregation has an influential role in recognizing and affirming men for such an office.

2 Timothy 2:1-2; Acts 15:22

  1. By understanding our context…

Acts 20:28-30; 1 Peter 5:1-3; 1 Timothy 3:14-15; Titus 1:5-7

What should we do with this?
