God tells Israel to listen up because he has a contention against them, which reveals the reality of cause and effect.

  1. They aren’t much different than their ancestors, and they will bear the effect generationally (9:10-17)

  • Cause and effect…time (past, present, and future)
  • Cause and effect…location (Peor, Gilgal, Samaria, Gibeah)
  • Cause and effect…generation (children)

(9:10-17) The “fruit” of loving something more than God (v. 10) and not listening to him (v. 17)

(10:1-15) The “fruit” of fearing something more than God (vv. 2-3) and trusting in your own way (v. 13)
