In Psalm 11, King David is being advised to flee for shelter in the midst of an adversity. Instead, God’s King reaffirms his position of trust in the Lord. James Montgomery Boice preached that “Psalm 11 contains faith’s response to fear’s counsel.” David is Settled, v.1a. David’s position is, “Why flee when you can trust?” (McDonald) There is a passive understanding as well as an active placement we can recognize here. The passive — my trust is in the Lord. The active — I put my trust in the Lord. In the midst of panic, David’s mood is peace. (MacArthur) “Put your faith in the Lord, and He will protect you and direct your paths.” (Wiersbe) Israel is Scheming, v.1b-3. Ash writes, “There is something sobering about having archers aiming their arrows at you, but there is something utterly terrifying about these archers being hidden; you never know from what direction the deadly arrow will come.” “David didn’t need wings like a dove; he needed wings like an eagle so he could rise above the storm by faith and defeat his enemies.” (Wiersbe) Isaiah 40:28-31, “Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. 29 He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. 30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: 31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." “Society is built on truth, and when truth is questioned or denied, the foundations shake.” (Wiersbe) “What shall we do when the Bible is undermined and its teachings disregarded—when even churchmen seem to support the rising tide of secularism?” (Boice) God is Sovereign, v.4-7. “His throne is in heaven, unmoved and unmovable, no matter what kingdoms on earth may rise or fall.” (MacDonald) Ash says, “The wicked think they can skulk in “the shadows”: that no one sees them plot, hears them conspire or watches them shoot. They are wrong. For the God in heaven who governs the world sees every deed and hears every word.” Proverbs 15:3, “The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.” “This is undiluted, perfect retribution.” (MacArthur) “God must act consistently with his holy character, and he will execute perfect justice in all his dealings with men.” (Lawson) Spurgeon preached from Psalm 11 that God “refines [the righteous] with afflictions.” “It is in man’s extremities that he discovers God’s sufficiencies.” -Lawson “He everywhere hath sway, and all things serve His might; His every act pure blessing is, His path unsullied light. We comprehend Him not, yet earth and heaven tell God sits as sovereign on the throne and ruleth all things well.” —Author unknown
