What is our Mind?

  • Feelings and thoughts → any way we might be conscious
  • Feelings/emotions are not sinful, reflect God’s nature
    • Anger – Psalm 7:11; Deuteronomy 9:22; Romans 1:18
    • Compassion – Psalm 135:14; Judges 2:18; Deuteronomy 32:36
    • Grief/sadness – Genesis 6:6; Psalm 78:40
    • Love – 1 John 4:8; John 3:16; Jeremiah 31:3
    • Hate/disgust – Proverbs 6:16; Psalm 5:5; Psalm 11:5
    • Jealousy – Exodus 20:5; Exodus 34:14; Joshua 24:19
    • Joy – Zephaniah 3:17; Isaiah 62:5; Jeremiah 32:41
  • Rational and logical thought likewise reflect God’s nature
    • God sets chaos into order (Genesis 1)
    • Romans 11:14-36
    • John 14:26
    • Creative nature is linked with his ordering activity is linked with His relational nature (Genesis 2)
    • Psalm 94:9-11
    • John 17:17

How is our mind reformed?

  • Deuteronomy 6:4-15
    • What we learn of God with our mind must be exported to our heart (Deuteronomy 6:6)
    • We learn most deeply when we make the effort to teach (Deuteronomy 6:7)
    • We need constant reminders of what we “know” (Deuteronomy 6:8-15)
  • Scripture instructs us on ways we ought to think about God, ourselves and creation
    • Romans 12:2-3
    • 2 Peter 1:5-8
  • Scripture instructs us to change the way we feel in certain instances
    • Matthew 6:25-27
    • Philippians 4:4-7

Jesus instructs our thoughts and feelings through His Word.

  • How do we use the mind God gave us against him?
  • Where are we trusting our gift of emotion more than the Giver?
  • How would we describe our “mind diet”?
