The River - John 7:37-39

Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; For the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

  1. When was Jesus glorified? When He into heaven 40 days after His resurrection - Acts 1:3-5,9

  2. The Holy Spirit was given - both before and after Christ’s glorification into heaven.

  • Before the ascension: Sunday evening - John 20 - This was salvation. Christ had died for humanity’s sin. He gave the disciples the Spirit who came and lived in them. Because it was before Jesus was glorified, it is not the river experience with the Holy Spirit.

    * Salvation is like a well, not a river (Isaiah 12:3; John 4:14).

  • After the ascension: the Day of , fifty days after the resurrection - Acts 2:1-4 This was the baptism of the Holy Spirit talked about in Acts 1:4-8. Spirit baptism is a second experience distinct from salvation.

The of the Holy Spirit is the experience Jesus talked about in John 7.

  1. Characteristics of Rivers

    A. Rivers have - Acts 1:8; Luke 4:18 The same anointing Jesus had, He wants to give to us.

    B. Rivers the landscape - 1 John 3:8; Acts 10:38 Jesus destroys the devil’s work, changing people’s lives

    C. Rivers have direction. Holy Spirit baptism moves in three directions.

    • A River Upward in - Acts 2:11; 10:46 The baptism of the Holy Spirit creates a greater level of praise.

    • A River Outward in - Acts 1:8; 2:14 The purpose of Spirit baptism’s power is to tell others about Jesus.

    • A River Inward in - 1 Corinth. 14:4; Jude 1:20 You receive a prayer language (tongues) that the Spirit prays through you, building you up.
