The Aim of Discipleship

September 07, 2025

Without vision, people wander aimlessly (Proverbs 29:18). As a church, what are we aiming at and how do we go about it? Perhaps it is better to ask: What did Jesus aim at and how did He go about it?

  • Matthew 4:19 – He had an aim for who His disciples would become and how they were to continue His vision!
  • Following Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, He gave two clear commands:
    • Preach the Gospel (Mark 16:15) and Make Disciples (Matthew 28:18-20)
    • As the Body of Christ, Our Aim is to: Make disciples who love & live like Jesus!

The target is to:

1. Clearly teach, preach, proclaim, and explain the of Jesus Christ!

  • Mark 16:15; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 1:16; Ephesians 1:13-14; Galatians 1:6-9
  • We cannot disciple anyone who is unsure or confused about the Gospel.

2. Cultivate an atmosphere where following Jesus is our utmost !

  • Matthew 5:6; Matthew 11:28-30; Matthew 16:24
  • We cannot disciple anyone who has no desire to know or follow Jesus.

3. Model & communicate a to the lifelong process of loving and living like Jesus!

  • Matthew 4:19-20; John 6:66-69; John 8:31-32; Luke 14:25-34
  • Long term devotion yields long-term results. Devotion to Jesus always comes with significant costs. The costs are acceptable.

4. Build relationships & intentionally others as we are being discipled.

  • Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 2:42-47
  • If the first century church had not been faithful to making disciples, there would have been no second century church.
  • When you invest in others (family; friends; school; work), you are participating in God’s mission of changing the world one relationship at a time! Let’s go!

The Great Commission of making disciples requires time, trust, and long-term training. Beginning with faith in the Gospel, our resources are invested in helping people to know Christ and follow Him with their lives until the whole world has heard!
