Parenthood

If you have any questions from the message today, send them here and I'll follow up!

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. (Ephesians 6:1-4, ESV)

A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves. (Luke 22:24-27, ESV)

As followers of Jesus, we use our authority to rule but to serve.

Children should honor their parent’s authority.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. (Ephesians 6:1, ESV)

Our kids first thoughts about who God is come from who we are.

“Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” (Ephesians 6:2-3, ESV)

Parents should shepherd their authority well.

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. (Ephesians 6:4, ESV)

As a parent, our primary role is that of trainer

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

So What?

Do your own family of origin work.

Focus on cooperation instead of competition.

Choose forgiveness and repair after conflict.

As always, if you'd like to talk more with me about anything we discussed, you can sign up for meeting time.
