There and Back Again (and again)

The Oddity of Easter

  • Without the reality of the resurrection, the teachings of Jesus are nothing more than good advice.

1 Corinthians 15:14 “And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain…”

  • We often experience a disconnect between the bright triumph of Easter Sunday and the painful reality of our actual lives.
  • When your life falls apart and your map burns up, a “cute” cultural faith does not help; you need something rugged.

The Road to Emmaus

A Journey of Disillusionment

  • Emmaus is a seven-mile walk representing the crushing, hollow reality of grief.
  • The disciples had placed their hope in a Messiah they expected to overthrow Rome, and watched that hope get dismantled.
  • The Road to Emmaus is a universal human paradigm for profound disappointment.

“The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” - Robert Burns

Jesus Joins the Walk

  • Jesus could have instantly fixed their pain with one sentence, but He chose to listen.

  • Before correcting their theology, Jesus invites them to lay their raw emotions bare.
  • His first move is always to stay with us in the dirt and confusion of our shattered plans.

The Table at Emmaus

A Cosmic Reversal

  • In Genesis 3, the first humans shared a meal and their eyes were opened to their shame.
  • At Emmaus, the disciples share a meal and their eyes are opened to the grace of the Resurrected Guide.

  • Jesus absorbed the full weight of human rebellion so we could be welcomed back to God's table.

What Opened Their Eyes?

  • Physical proximity to Jesus for seven miles did not open their eyes.
  • Deep theological knowledge from the greatest Bible study in history did not open their eyes.
  • Their awakening happened through communion—the vulnerable moment of letting Him feed them.
  • Easter isn't just a historical fact; it’s a living presence pulling up a chair in the middle of your life.

The Road from Emmaus

Walking Back into the Dark

  • The real miracle of this story is not the journey of loss, but the journey back.
  • Nothing in the violent city of Jerusalem had changed, but the disciples had changed.
  • An empty grave means God's new world has officially arrived.
  • You can walk back into your difficult circumstances not just forgiven, but sent as an agent of the Resurrected King.

An Ongoing Journey

  • The Christian experience is not a flat, problem-free road.
  • When your map burns up again, the One who defeated death promises to walk in the dirt with you.
  • When your eyes are opened, don't stay at the table alone: get up and tell someone.

As always, if you'd like to talk more with me about anything we discussed, you can sign up for meeting time. If you have any questions from the message today, send them here and I'll follow up!
