The Anatomy of a Fight

If you’re new to Lifpoint | Worthington, take 30 seconds to fill out our Welcome Card! Have a question about today's message? Ask it here.

What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. (James 4:1-3, ESV)

Quarrels and Fights

  • James uses the intense language of battle to describe our relational friction and minor inconveniences.
  • Tension causes us to lose trust and immediately question another person's motives.

The War Within

  • James teaches that the true origin of relational conflict comes from the passions at war inside of us.
  • Passions are our internal impulses, desires, and wants that subconsciously shape our behaviors.
  • Relational fights occur when their hidden wants slam directly into your hidden wants.
  • A surface blowup over something minor is usually a symptom of a deeper internal need to be seen.

The Vertical Problem

  • James traces our horizontal, relational chaos directly to a vertical spiritual problem.

You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? (James 4:4, ESV)

  • We commit spiritual adultery when we demand that the people around us satisfy our deepest internal needs.
  • When we expect a human being to fund our worth or secure our identity, we are practicing idolatry.
  • We treat people like a god, and then we crucify them when they inevitably fail to produce.

The Pivot of Grace

  • The only way to stop the horizontal warfare is a total shift toward friendship with God.

But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” ... Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. (James 4:6, 8, ESV)

  • On the cross, Jesus absorbed the cost of our rebellion so we could walk in unshakeable reconciliation.
  • When your deepest needs are perfectly met by God's grace, a massive weight is lifted off your relationships.

Liberated to Love

  • Vertical liberation does not mean we detach from others; it liberates us to truly love them.
  • Because your satisfaction is secured by God, you can love horizontally without demanding reciprocation.
  • You no longer have to punish people for failing to be a god because they aren't your god anymore.
  • When human relationships fracture, we don't just need to try harder; we need a massive infusion of vertical grace.

So What?

  • Bring a specific, frozen, or fractured relationship to mind right now.
  • Before picking up any tools to rebuild, take a posture of absolute openness before God.
  • Commit to laying down your relational ledgers and praying a simple prayer for ears to hear His voice.
