You're Reading It Wrong: Philippians 4:13

Week 1

By Michael Storts, September 06, 2026

Big Idea of the Series: We can read the right Bible verse and still get the wrong message. This series is about slowing down, understanding the text in its context, and learning to read Scripture the way it was meant to be read.

Hermeneutics: Learning how to read the Bible clearly and understand what the Biblical authors meant before deciding what the Bible means for us.

We want to practice Exegesis over Eisegesis.

Exegesis: “What does the Bible say?”

Eisegesis: “How can I make the Bible say what I want?”

C.L.E.A.R.:

  • Consider what it says - Read the actual text carefully
  • Locate where it sits - Passage, chapter, book, biblical story
  • Explore their world - Culture, history, original audience
  • Ask what it meant - Determine the original meaning
  • Respond in ours - Apply that truth to our lives

Philippians 4:13 NLT For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.

Philippians 4:10-12 NLT How I praise the Lord that you are concerned about me again. I know you have always been concerned for me, but you didn’t have the chance to help me.Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have.I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little.

  • Philippians 4:13 isn’t, “Christ will help me accomplish whatever I want.”
  • Philippians 4:13 is, “Christ will sustain me through whatever I face.”

Jesus gives me the strength necessary to remain faithful and content regardless of my circumstances.

  • Paul isn’t saying, “Jesus gives me the power to change every circumstance.”
  • Paul is saying, “Jesus gives me strength when the circumstance doesn’t change.”

Christ doesn’t promise strength to accomplish everything I want. He promises strength to endure everything I face.
