Making Room at the Table

Tables matter in Scripture. From beginning to end, God meets His people at the table—not because the people are perfect, but because they are invited.

On the night before the cross, Jesus didn’t gather the strongest, the most faithful, or the most put-together. He gathered the disciples as they were confused, fearful, distracted, and even one who would betray Him. And still, He made room at the table.

“And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body, which is given for you.’” (Luke 22:19)

Communion reminds us that the table was never about who deserved to be there. It was about who Jesus was willing to give Himself for.

When we come to the Lord’s Table, we are not proving our worth, we are receiving grace. We bring our brokenness, our hunger, our doubts, and our need, and Jesus meets us with His body and His blood. The table is where strangers become family, where forgiveness is offered, and where unity is restored.

Paul reminds the church:

“Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.” (1 Corinthians 10:17)

At this table, there is room. Room for joy and grief. Room for repentance and hope. Room for children, new believers, and long-time saints. Room for those who feel close to God—and those who feel far away.

As we take communion, we remember this truth: Jesus made room for us at His table so we could make room for others at ours.

So today, come. Take the bread. Drink the cup. And know this—there is a seat for you, and there is always room at the table.
