"A Parade of Mixed Reviews"

By Paul Wirth, March 26, 2026

Luke 19:28–40 (ESV) 28 And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’ ” 32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. 33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” 35 And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36 And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. 37 As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38 saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

How do should we respond when Jesus approaches our life?

• Obedience that Trusts Jesus Fully

Luke 19:30-33 (ESV) 30 “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’ ” 32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. 33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 And they said, “The Lord has need of it.”

Zechariah 9:9 (ESV) 9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Luke 19: 37-38 (ESV) 7 As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38 saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

Matthew 21:9 (ESV) 9 And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”

*Hosanna- “Save us now” *

John 14:15 (ESV) 15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

Authentic belief in Jesus results in aligning our lives and values with Him.

Matthew 21:10–11 (ESV) 10 And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?”

• Stirring is not the same as Surrender

Matthew 21:11 (ESV) 11 And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”

Admiration is common; surrender is rare.

John 2:23–25 (ESV) 23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. 24 But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people 25 and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.

WE MUST ASK OURSELVES ARE WE FOLLOWING THE CROWD FOLLOWING CHRIST, OR ACTUALLY FOLLOWING CHRIST

Luke19:39 (ESV) 39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”

• Resistance occurs when we value Control over Truth

Rejection of Jesus has more to do with an unwillingness to surrender over a lack of evidence.

John 3:19 (ESV) 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.

Luke 19:40 (ESV) 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

Revelation 3:20 (ESV) 20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.

• We Can’t Stay Neutral About Jesus

Matthew 12:30 (ESV) 30 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

Luke 9:23–25 (ESV) 23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?

Philippians 2:8–11 (ESV) 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
