Temptation

Theology of the Cross

THREE TOOLS JESUS GIVES US TO RESIST TEMPTATION

  1. Prayer – Draw near to Jesus in prayer.
  2. The Word of God – holding bible verses in your heart gives strength, encouragement, and direction in times of struggle.
  3. Community – We do life together, like Jesus and the disciples, to hold one another up.

WHAT IS A THEOLOGY OF THE CROSS?

HEIDELBERG DISPUTATION (# 20,21), Martin Luther, 1518

“He deserves to be called a theologian, however, who comprehends the visible and manifest things of God seen through suffering and the cross. A theologian of glory calls evil good and good evil. A theologian of the cross calls a thing what it actually is.”

From “The Cross in Our Context” by Douglas John Hall p. 24

The theology of the cross is first of all a statement about God, and what it says about God is not that God thinks humankind so wrenched that it deserves death and hell, but that God thinks humankind and the whole creation so good, so beautiful, so precious in its intention and its potentiality, that its actualization, its fulfillment, its redemption is worth dying for.

WHERE DO JESUS’ SCRIPTURE QUOTES COME FROM?

Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone.’” - Deuteronomy 8:3

Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.’” – Deuteronomy 6:13

Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” - Deuteronomy 6:16
