Hope Lives: Commissioned

Daily Devotional

This five day devotional will be taking a deeper dive into the sermon from this weekend. We will explore what it means to make disciples, reflect on Jesus' teachings, and discover how we can live out this commandment in our daily lives.

Day 1 - Matthew 28:19-20

As we begin this devotional journey, we are reminded of Jesus' great commission to “Go and make disciples of all nations.” This statement invites reflection on our own understanding of discipleship. Discipleship is about inviting others into a transformative relationship with Jesus rather than merely transferring information about our beliefs. It’s a calling to live out our faith authentically and to share the unconditional love of Jesus with those around us. Imagine a world where everyone modeled Christ's teachings of love, compassion, and forgiveness.

Sharing our faith can sometimes feel intimidating. Several factors, from cultural perceptions to personal hesitations, can obstruct us from fulfilling this command. In this first day of our devotional, let’s reflect on the power of invitation over coercion in our journey of making disciples.

  • How might our lives reflect the compelling nature of Jesus' love for others?
  • What does making disciples mean to you personally?
  • In what ways do you feel hesitant about sharing your faith?
  • How can you invite someone into a deeper relationship this week?
  • Pray for opportunities to share your faith with others.
  • Ask God for the courage to step out of your comfort zone.

Day 2 - John 13:34

Today's focus centers around the command to love one another as Jesus loves us. Discipleship encompasses not only teaching others about God's word but living out that love in tangible ways. In every interaction, you have the opportunity to model Christian love and compassion. This week, think about how you can reflect Jesus' love through your actions, words, and attitudes. What does it look like to love those around you unconditionally?

Living out love can mean challenging societal norms or overcoming misunderstandings that arise from the misuse of the Gospel. Jesus’ perfect example teaches us that love is the foundation for all discipleship. As you practice this love, remember it is a continuous journey.

  • How can you show love to someone who is difficult to love?
  • What steps can you take to embody Christ’s love in your daily life?
  • How can your community benefit from more loving interactions?
  • Pray for those who find it hard to accept love.
  • Reflect on your experiences of love and how they’ve shaped your understanding of God.

Day 3 Luke 6:36

This devotional day encourages us to think deeply about being merciful as God is merciful. Discipleship involves understanding, empathy, and above all, mercy. It's about recognizing our own need for grace and extending that grace to others—even those who may not deserve it. As we cultivate an attitude of mercy, we mirror God’s character and draw others closer to Him.

Reflect on your interactions with those around you.

  • Are you quick to judge, or do you offer compassion?
  • What attitudes do you need to change in order to show mercy more readily?
  • Who in your life could benefit from a merciful response?
  • How does understanding God’s mercy towards you influence how you treat others?
  • Pray for a heart of compassion towards others.
  • Consider ways you can demonstrate mercy this week.

Day 4 Matthew 5:39

On the fourth day, we delve into the profound teaching of turning the other cheek. Jesus’ direction challenges us to consider how we respond to offense and adversity. In a world that often promotes retaliation and defense of self, our calling as disciples is to respond with grace. This radical approach is what sets disciples apart and displays the heart of Christ.

Turning the other cheek involves simmering down our egos and embracing humility.Take time this week to reflect on conflicts or disagreements you've faced. Instead of seeking revenge, how can you extend peace and understanding? Emulating Jesus in this way nurtures discipleship and strengthens relationships, making room for healing and reconciliation.

  • What situations have you faced that called for grace instead of retaliation?
  • What steps can you take towards reconciliation?
  • Pray for peaceful resolutions in conflicts you are facing.

Day 5 1 Peter 3:15

As we conclude our devotional journey, let’s reflect on being ready to share the hope we possess in Christ. In this information age, the world desperately seeks authentic stories of hope and truth. We bear a responsibility to articulate why we follow Jesus and to convey the reasons behind our faith with clarity and love. Engaging in this meaningful dialogue can lead others to experience the transforming love of Christ.

This week, commit to practicing your testimony, being ready to share if God presents an opportunity to you. Reflect on the beauty and power of the Gospel, and gain confidence in your story. Our stories can be compelling invitations for others to explore faith and the love of Jesus. Every conversation can be a holy moment when we are in tune with the Holy Spirit

  • Why do you to continue to follow Jesus?
  • How can you share your faith in an authentic way?
  • Is there a relationship in your life God is inviting you to invest in more deeply?
  • Pray for the courage to share your story.
  • Ask God for opportunities to connect with those who need hope.
