Faith that Saves

Hebrews 11:7

By Ryan Skolrud, June 28, 2026

Hebrews 11:7

By faith Noah, after he was warned about what was not yet seen and motivated by godly fear, built an ark to deliver his family. By faith he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

Big Idea: True faith trusts God’s warnings and obeys his instructions.

  1. Faith Listens to Warnings

Hebrews 11:7a

By faith Noah, after he was warned about what was not yet seen…

Genesis 6:5-7

When the LORD saw that human wickedness was widespread on the earth and that every inclination of the human mind was nothing but evil all the time, the LORD regretted that he had made man on the earth, and he was deeply grieved. Then the LORD said, “I will wipe mankind, whom I created, off the face of the earth, together with the animals, creatures that crawl, and birds of the sky—for I regret that I made them.”

Genesis 6:8-9

Noah, however, found favor with the LORD. These are the family records of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among his contemporaries; Noah walked with God.

Definition of “favor”:

An undeserved blessing given by a powerful being to one who is less powerful.

Noah walked with God.

When you are close to God, you will believe what he says.

  1. Faith Fears and Follows

Hebrews 11:7b

…and motivated by godly fear, built an ark to deliver his family.

Isaiah 6:5

Then I said: Woe is met for I am ruined because I am a man of unclean lips and live among a people of unclean lips, and because my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of Armies.

James 2:18-20

But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without works, and I will show you faith by my works. You believe that God is one. Good! Even the demons believe—and they shudder. Senseless person! Are you willing to learn that faith without works is useless?

“To say that you believe in God does not make you a Christian, it only qualifies you to be a demon.”

Do you have Noah’s faith or a demon’s faith?

  1. Faith Condemns Corruption

Hebrews 11:7c

By faith he condemned the world…

...faith has a condemning power toward an ungodly world. You do not need to be constantly telling worldly people that they are doing wrong; let them see clearly the evidence of your faith. That will bear the strongest conceivable witness against their unbelief and sin…

“Those who preach falsehood or practice immorality are invariably offended when they are exposed; but fear of offending should not keep believers from exposing their evil. When, in the name of love and humility, we fail to expose religions, cults, and philosophies that give men false spiritual hope or we fail to challenge those who promote irreverence and moral filth, we serve neither love nor humility but sin.”

  1. Faith Inherits Righteousness

Hebrews 11:7d

…and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

Romans 4:1-5

What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found? If Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about—but not before God. 3 For what does the Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness. Now to the one who works, pay is not credited as a gift, but as something owed. But to the one who does not work, but believes on him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited for righteousness.

Jesus is the ark.

Romans 2:4

…do you despise the riches of his kindness, restraint, and patience, not recognizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?
