CCLI License# 1748657 Responsive Scripture Reading | 2 Corinthians 8:1-9 READER We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. CHURCH For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints—and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us. READER Accordingly, we urged Titus that as he had started, so he should complete among you this act of grace. But as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you—see that you excel in this act of grace also. I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine. CHURCH For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich. CCLI License# 1748657 **SERMON NOTES 📖 Let Brotherly Love Continue One of the great calls to the church is not just sustaining but expanding one’s love for your brothers and your love as a brother or sister in Christ in a world that is increasingly critical, intolerant, suspicious, and shrinking in its love for others. In our sermon text this morning, as we continue in our study on the biblical doctrine of love, the writer to the Hebrews writes: “Let brotherly love continue.” Regularly, the Scriptures call Christians not simply to continue in brotherly love but to increase it. 1 Thessalonians 4:9–10 “Now concerning brotherly love you have no need for anyone to write to you… But we urge you, brothers, to do this more and more.” 1 Peter 1:22–23 “Having purified your souls… for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart…” ❓ The Question for Every Christian: Am I living in such a way to extend and expand brotherly love? Do I understand that the continuation and expansion of brotherly love demands intentionality? 🏠 Pursue Hospitality “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” Hospitality means to love the stranger. Christians are called to be philoxenic – loving strangers, not fearing them. You may be entertaining angels unaware. Richard Phillips: “There may be more to the people we meet than meets the eye… There beside you in the pews is probably a saint of God in light…” Hospitality builds relationships and the Kingdom of God. Live with a view to continually expanding the circle of your friendships—from those you know to those you don’t. 🤲 Be Intentionally Merciful “Remember those who are in prison as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you are in one body.” The word “remember” demands intentionality. Don’t forget the suffering. Richard Phillips: “We forget to love other people, probably because we are too wrapped up in ourselves.” Ways to Remember: Communicate directly and regularly (like Paul’s letters) Read biographies of suffering Christians Pray habitually for the forgotten Show up personally How intentional are you in cultivating compassion for suffering brothers and sisters in Christ? 💍 Treasure Purity “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled…”** Honor marriage: between one man and one woman under Christ. Remain sexually pure: Before marriage Within marriage Fear God: “God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.” 1 Corinthians 6:9–11 “And such were some of you. But you were washed, sanctified, justified…” 💰 Foster True Financial Freedom Hebrews 13:5 “Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have…” Two Keys: 1.Contentment in Christ 1 Timothy 6:6–10 – “Godliness with contentment is great gain…” 2.Confidence in Christ Psalm 54:4 – “God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life.” 📖 Gospel Fidelity Hebrews 13:7–8 “Remember your leaders… Consider the outcome of their life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.”** 3 Responses: Meditation – “Remember those who spoke the Word of God to you.” Ephesians 4:11–13 – “To equip the saints… to maturity…” Imitation – “Consider the outcome of their lives and imitate their faith.” Adoration – “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” ✝️ Jesus’ Love is Expansive: He took on our humanity He went to the cross He now intercedes for us forever Let the unchanging message of an unchanging Savior transform your heart and expand your love.
