Congregational Scripture Reading // Jeremiah 31:31-34

CHURCH

*31 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the LORD. 33 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.” **

Christ Be Magnified// Cody Carnes

Verse 1

Were creation suddenly articulate With a thousand tongues to lift one cry Then from North to South and East to West We'd hear Christ be magnified

Verse 2

Were the whole Earth echoing His eminence His name would burst from sea and sky From rivers to the mountain tops We'd hear Christ be magnified

Chorus

Oh! Christ be magnified! Let His praise arise Christ be magnified in me Oh! Christ be magnified from the altar of my life Christ be magnified in me

Verse 3

When every creature finds its inmost melody And every human heart its native cry Oh then in one enraptured hymn of praise We'll sing Christ be magnified

Bridge 1

I won't bow to idols, I'll stand strong and worship You And if it puts me in the fire, I'll rejoice 'cause You're there too I won't be formed by feelings, I hold fast to what is true If the cross brings transformation then I'll be crucified with You

Bridge 2

'Cause death is just the doorway into resurrection life And if I join You in Your suffering, then I'll join You when You rise And when You return in glory with all the angels and the saints My heart will still be singing, my song will be the same

Chorus

SERMON NOTES - PASTOR KEVIN DIBBLEY

Introduction: The Meaning of Baptism

  • Baptism is a foundational command (Matthew 28:18–20)
  • It is a lifelong reference point for every believer
    • Like a wedding ring, baptism:
    • Reminds us of what Christ has done
  • Reminds us of who we now are
    • Baptism is a God-given tool to fight sin
    • You are not who you once were

I. Understand the Basics of Baptism: Real Transformation Has Happened (Romans 6:1–4)

1. Baptism = Union with Christ

United with Christ in: His death → death to sin His resurrection → new life

2. The Gospel Contrast

In Adam → Condemnation In Christ → Justification (sin’s penalty paid) Life (new power to live)

3. The Meaning of Justification

Jesus paid the penalty of sin (Romans 6:23) God remains just and the justifier (Romans 3:21–26) Fulfilled in Christ’s substitution (Isaiah 53)

4. The Result of Christ’s Work

Grace pays for sin’s guilt Grace breaks sin’s grip Key Truth: Because Jesus died for your sin, sin no longer has power over you.

II. Continuously Believe Your Baptism: Transformation Can and Will Happen (Romans 6:5–11)

1. Your Baptism Represents Reality

You are: Dead to sin Alive to God

2. Freedom from Sin’s Power

Old self crucified (Romans 6:6) No longer enslaved (Romans 6:7) New identity: “New creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17) “Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20)

3. Freedom from Sin’s Lies

We must “consider” (reckon) ourselves: Dead to sin Alive to God (Romans 6:11)

The enemy says: “You’re still a slave”

The gospel says: “You are free”

Key Truth: Your identity in Christ must shape your thinking daily.

III. Battle with Your Baptism: Let Your New Reality Fight Sin (Romans 6:12–14)

A. Defy Sin’s Tyranny

Do not let sin reign (Romans 6:12) Refuse to offer your body to sin Sin is a defeated master You must actively say: “No”

Picture: Sin is a dethroned king—don’t obey it.

B. Enlist in God’s Service

Present yourself to God (Romans 6:13) You are: Alive from the dead An instrument for righteousness

Daily surrender: “Here I am, Lord—use me” Key Truth: You will serve someone—now you serve Christ.

Conclusion: Live What Your Baptism Declares

Baptism is not just a moment—it is a message for life

It declares: I have died with Christ I am alive in Christ I belong to Christ Final Encouragement Stop listening to sin Start living in grace Walk in newness of life

Key Verse

“So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.” — Romans 6:11
