Passage Exodus 2:23–25 “During those many days the king of Egypt died, and the people of Israel groaned because of their slavery and cried out for help. Their cry for rescue from slavery came up to God. And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. God saw the people of Israel—and God knew.” (ESV) Main Truth God is a loving, covenant-keeping God who hears our cries, sees our suffering, and knows our deepest needs. His deliverance is based on His faithfulness, not our worthiness. 1. God Hears Our Groaning Israel suffered under slavery for many years and cried out to God. God heard their cries and was already at work preparing their deliverance. God's plans are not dependent on circumstances or human leaders. Key Verse: Psalm 34:17 “When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.” “You are not to think that those cries were what caused God to act in redemption. He had been working out His plan of redemption long before those cries ever came to Him. God is often working out His plan to glorify His Son and to save His people even when we don’t realize it.” Ligon Duncan Key Thought: God was already preparing Israel's deliverance before they realized it. Their cries were evidence that God was already at work. 2. God Sees Our Suffering God saw the hardships of His people and drew them back to Himself. Suffering often becomes the means God uses to deepen our dependence on Him. God uses trials to strengthen faith and produce perseverance. Key Verse: Psalm 34:18 “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” 3. God Knows God's knowledge is personal and compassionate, not distant or merely intellectual. He remembers His promises and acts according to His covenant faithfulness. Jesus understands our struggles because He experienced suffering Himself. Key Verse: Hebrews 4:15 “We do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses…” The Greater Deliverer The Exodus points beyond Moses to Jesus Christ. Jesus is the Better Adam who succeeded where Adam failed. Jesus is the Better Noah who saves from eternal judgment. Jesus is the Better Abraham who left heaven to bless His people. Jesus is the Better Moses who permanently delivers us from sin. Application When life is difficult, remember: God Hears. God Sees. God Knows. Even when we cannot see what God is doing, He is faithfully working out His plan for His glory and for the good of His people. Through Jesus Christ, He has provided the ultimate deliverance from sin into freedom and restored fellowship with Himself. Discussion Questions Why do you think God allowed Israel to suffer so long before delivering them? How does Ligon Duncan's quote challenge the way we think about prayer and God's timing? In what ways can suffering draw us closer to God? What does it mean that God “remembered His covenant” with Israel? How does Jesus' suffering help us trust Him in our own trials? Which truth speaks most to your current situation: God hears, God sees, or God knows? Why?
