Primary Text: 1 Samuel 3:2–10 Supporting Text: Genesis 1:1–7 God is still speaking. The question is whether we are tuned in enough to recognize His voice, trust what He says, and respond in obedience. “Speak, LORD, for thy servant heareth.” 1 Samuel 3:9 TUNE IN Samuel was serving in the house of God, but he was still learning to recognize the voice of God. That reminds us of something important: Being close to the things of God is not the same as recognizing the voice of God. Samuel heard the call, but he initially mistook God’s voice for Eli’s. Sometimes our challenge is not that God is silent. Our challenge is learning to recognize whose voice we are hearing. HEARING vs. LISTENING Hearing receives sound. Listening pays attention and prepares to respond. Obedience puts feet on what we heard. PERSONAL REFLECTION What voices have been competing for my attention lately? KINGDOM KEY #1 GOD’S VOICE COMES BEFORE HIS MOVE “And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” Genesis 1:3 Notice the order: God spoke. Creation responded. Something changed. Before there was light, there was a voice. Before there was order, there was a voice. Before there was life, there was a voice. Throughout Scripture, we see the same pattern: He speaks → We respond → Something changes. Noah heard before he built. Abraham heard before he left. Moses heard before he returned to Egypt. Peter heard before he stepped out of the boat. Samuel heard before he became the prophet God called him to be. WRITE THIS DOWN We cannot expect God’s results while ignoring God’s instructions. Sometimes we are asking God to move while He has already given us something to do. We ask for provision, while God gives direction. We ask for a miracle, while God gives instruction. We ask Him to open a door, while He tells us which door to stop standing in front of. KEY TRUTH Many times, the miracle is hiding inside the instruction. HEART CHECK What has God already told me to do that I am still asking Him to tell me to do again? My next step: KINGDOM KEY #2 LEARN GOD’S VOICE BEFORE YOU MOVE ON HIS WORD Samuel heard God, but initially thought it was Eli. He heard the voice. He just did not recognize whose voice it was. Everything around us is talking: Our emotions. Our fears. Our past. Culture. Social media. Other people’s opinions. Our own desires. The loudest voice is not automatically the truest voice. GOD’S WORD IS OUR FILTER God’s written Word gives us a foundation for discerning what we believe we are hearing. God will not give us personal direction that contradicts what He has already revealed in Scripture. Samuel also needed Eli. Eli recognized something Samuel did not yet understand. That reminds us that healthy discernment can include wise, godly counsel. We need people who love us enough to help us distinguish between: My fear My emotions My desires God’s truth SOMETIMES GOD ISN’T SAYING: “Listen harder.” HE MAY BE SAYING: “Get quieter.” Jesus regularly withdrew from the crowds to spend time with the Father. Sometimes we need to turn off the television. Put down the phone. Open the Bible. Pray. Sit quietly. Listen. WRITE THIS DOWN You learn a voice by becoming familiar with it. “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27 The more time we spend with the Shepherd, the more familiar His voice becomes. TUNING PRAYER Lord, tune my… Heart Mind Attention Desires Ears HEART CHECK Whose voice has the greatest influence over my decisions right now? What may be making it difficult for me to hear God clearly? KINGDOM KEY #3 WHEN GOD SPEAKS, SOMETHING SHOULD MOVE Samuel eventually responded: “Speak; for thy servant heareth.” 1 Samuel 3:10 Samuel was not only saying, “I hear You.” He was positioning himself to respond. James writes: “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only…” James 1:22 God is not only looking for people who can repeat what He said. He is forming people who will respond to what He said. WRITE THIS DOWN The evidence that I heard God is not how emotional I became. It is what changed after I heard Him. If God says forgive, forgive. If God says go, go. If God says stop, stop. If God says wait, wait. Sometimes obedience means moving. Sometimes obedience means staying. Sometimes obedience means speaking. Sometimes obedience means becoming quiet. Sometimes obedience means starting. Sometimes obedience means waiting. Whatever God says, our response matters. Samuel’s first prophetic assignment was difficult. God’s voice did not always tell Samuel what he wanted to hear. Maturity means we do not decide whether God has spoken based only on whether we like what we heard. SHIFT THE QUESTION Instead of only asking: “God, what are You going to do?” Begin asking: “God, what are You asking me to do?” KEY TRUTH The miracle may not be waiting on God’s next move. It may be waiting on your response to what He has already said. GET TUNED IN God is still speaking. Through His Word. Through His Spirit. Through wise counsel. Through conviction. Through moments of stillness. So the question is not only: CAN YOU HEAR HIM NOW? The deeper question is: WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH WHAT YOU HEARD? Maybe you have been waiting for another word when God is waiting for your response. Maybe you have been asking for another confirmation when He has already given an instruction. Maybe you have been asking Him to move while He has been telling you to move. THIS WEEK GET TUNED IN. LISTEN UP. RESPOND. OBEY. HONOR GOD. Because when God speaks… SOMETHING SHOULD MOVE. LIVE IT LOUD Before leaving today, write down one thing you believe God is calling you to respond to.
