Luke 19:28-44

Series: Open the Door

By Nate Young, March 29, 2026

Palm Sunday is where the kingdom of this world & the Kingdom of God .

BiG Idea: Jesus is THE .

John 10:9 9 I am the gate. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture.

John 14:6 (emphasis added) 6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

On Palm Sunday Jesus becomes the true and better .

Luke 19:29–30 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples 30 and said, “Go into the village ahead of you. As you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it.

Zechariah 9:9 9 Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout in triumph, Daughter Jerusalem! Look, your King is coming to you; he is righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Luke 19:37–38 37 Now he came near the path down the Mount of Olives, and the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles they had seen: 38 Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord., Peace in heaven and glory in the highest heaven!

He was mounting, not a military, but a prophetic and symbolic, campaign; not a revolution, but the final bringing to birth of God's long-promised kingdom. The meaning…is this: Jesus is claiming to be Israel’s true king, but he is redefining kingship, kingdom, and victory themselves. -N.T. Wright (Luke for Everyone)

Luke 19:41–42 41 As he approached and saw the city, he wept for it, 42 saying, “If you knew this day what would bring peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes.

Isaiah 53:5 5 But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds.

On Palm Sunday Jesus became the Open Door

James 4:8 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

The opened the door for us

Hebrews 10:19–20 19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have boldness to enter the sanctuary through the blood of Jesus—20 he has inaugurated for us a new and living way through the curtain (that is, through his flesh)—

Luke 23:45 45 because the sun’s light failed. The curtain of the sanctuary was split down the middle.

Mark 15:38 38 Then the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

Jesus as the into God’s presence

BiG Question: What road will you walk this Holy Week?

It is not so much the case that God has a mission for his church in the world, as that God has a church for his mission in the world. Mission was not made for the church; the church was made for mission—God’s mission. -Christopher Wright (The Mission of God)
